i could recommend better units in general but i don't think there is a magic pill for careless players. sturgian infantry is the strongest btw, probably the only troop tree which i wouldn't consider just a meatwall to cover rangeds. strugia's cav isn't the best though and their archers are relatively bad. #8.
The player faction is the strongest regardless of which one you choose to go with or even if you go independent. All AI factions are weaker regardless of units, size of the faction, or any other factor. The differences between the faction units is a minor concern by comparison. Even a new player that is just learning the game can be successful
